How to Open and Fix Final Cut Pro OMF Files in Logic Pro

An OMF exported from a Final Cut Pro workflow should make it possible to transfer an edited audio timeline into Logic Pro.

In practice, the file may fail to open, import with missing media, create empty tracks, lose fades or produce an incomplete session.

The audio itself is often still intact. The problem usually comes from the way the OMF describes the timeline and stores its media.

The answer depends on which version of Final Cut Pro was used.

Final Cut Pro 7 and Earlier Workflows

Final Cut Pro 7 included OMF audio export and could include volume and pan information in the exported turnover. This made OMF a common way to send Final Cut audio edits to mixing applications.

An archived Final Cut project, an older documentary or a long-running production may therefore still deliver an OMF created directly by Final Cut Pro 7.

Current Final Cut Pro

Current versions of Final Cut Pro use XML to transfer project and timeline information. Apple’s present workflow allows projects, events, libraries and clips to be exported through File → Export XML.

A modern Final Cut workflow may still produce an OMF through:

  • a third-party export application
  • an older Final Cut system
  • an intermediate editing application
  • a previously archived turnover
  • a collaborator who has already converted the Final Cut timeline

This guide applies when you already have an OMF originating from a Final Cut workflow.

For a direct workflow from current Final Cut Pro, FCPXML is normally the more appropriate source format. AAF Cleaner also accepts FCPXML (ZIP with media) in beta.

What Is Contained in an OMF?

An OMF is not simply a collection of audio files.

It can describe:

  • audio tracks
  • clip positions
  • source in and out points
  • edits
  • media references
  • embedded audio
  • volume information
  • pan information
  • fades and transitions
  • clip and track names

The receiving application must correctly interpret both the timeline structure and the media contained in the OMF.

If part of that structure is unsupported or interpreted differently, the import can fail even when the embedded audio itself is valid.

Why Can a Final Cut OMF Fail in Logic Pro?

OMF is an older interchange format, and different applications do not always interpret every part of it identically.

Common causes include:

  • unsupported OMF objects
  • unusual media descriptors
  • incorrect or incomplete media references
  • legacy metadata
  • incompatible fade information
  • unexpected channel organisation
  • damaged embedded media
  • incomplete OMF exports
  • differences in timecode interpretation

A direct import may therefore produce a completely different result from one OMF to another.

Current Logic Pro documentation focuses primarily on AAF for transferring multiple audio tracks, timeline positions and volume automation. Converting the OMF into a simpler AAF provides Logic with a more current interchange structure.

Common Symptoms

Logic Pro Refuses to Open the OMF

Logic may display an error immediately or stop during the import.

This generally indicates that the application cannot interpret part of the OMF structure.

The Project Opens with Missing Audio

The timeline may contain regions, but some media is unavailable.

Possible causes include:

  • an OMF created with external media
  • incomplete embedded audio
  • damaged media objects
  • an interrupted or incomplete export

Empty Tracks Appear

The original track structure may be present, but the clips have not been reconstructed correctly.

Clips Appear at the Wrong Time

A mismatch involving sequence start, source timecode or edit positions can shift regions away from their expected location.

Stereo Clips Become Mono

Legacy interchange formats often represent stereo sources as two separate mono channels.

This is not necessarily an error, but it can produce a different track layout in Logic Pro.

Clip Gain or Fades Are Missing

Gain and fade information may not translate identically between Final Cut, OMF and Logic Pro.

Logic Imports Only Part of the Timeline

One unsupported object or damaged media entry can sometimes prevent later parts of the edit from being reconstructed.

Before Converting the OMF

Keep the Original File

Never overwrite or modify the source OMF.

Obtain a Reference Video

When possible, request a reference movie with visible timecode.

It allows you to verify synchronization, timeline start, missing clips, scene changes, dialogue edits and final duration.

Confirm the Source Application

Find out whether the OMF was created by Final Cut Pro 7, a third-party Final Cut exporter, DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Premiere Pro or another conversion utility.

The file extension alone does not identify how the OMF was created.

Check Whether the Audio Is Embedded

AAF Cleaner currently requires OMF media to be embedded inside the .omf file.

If you received:

the OMF may use external media and is not currently supported as an OMF input.

In that case, request a new embedded OMF, an AAF with its media, or a Final Cut XML package suitable for conversion.

How to Convert the OMF with AAF Cleaner

Step 1 — Upload the OMF

Open AAF Cleaner and drop the .omf file into the upload area.

You do not need to create a ZIP when all audio is embedded in the OMF.

The supported OMF input currently requires:

  • OMF version 2
  • embedded media
  • uncompressed PCM audio
  • 16-bit or 24-bit audio

Step 2 — Select an AAF Output

Choose either:

  • Embedded AAF
  • AAF with separate audio

Embedded AAF

The timeline and audio are packaged together. This is convenient when the project is relatively small, you want a single downloadable file, or avoiding missing external media is the priority.

AAF with Separate Audio

The AAF references accompanying WAV files. Useful when you want direct access to the media, the project is large, or a self-contained AAF would be inconveniently large.

Keep the AAF and its generated media folder together.

Step 3 — Choose Clean or Faithful Mode

Clean Mode

Use Clean mode when the priority is a simple and robust Logic Pro import.

Clean mode can:

  • remove fades and crossfades
  • remove clip-gain objects
  • remove unsupported effects
  • preserve clip positions
  • preserve edit points
  • separate stereo material into independent left and right mono channels
  • create a simplified AAF structure

Clean mode is the best first choice when Logic refuses the original OMF, the direct import is incomplete, fades or gains cause problems, or you mainly need every clip in the correct position.

Faithful Mode

Use Faithful mode when retaining more of the original edit is important.

Faithful mode aims to preserve clip gain, fades and crossfades, stereo organisation, track and timeline structure, and more of the original editing information.

Which Mode Should You Try First?

For an OMF that Logic cannot open at all, begin with Clean mode.

For an OMF that opens but loses edit details, try Faithful mode.

You can also generate both versions and compare them in Logic Pro.

After processing:

  1. Download the generated file or ZIP.
  2. Extract the ZIP completely when separate media is used.
  3. Keep the AAF beside its audio folder.
  4. Open Logic Pro.

  6. Select the generated .aaf file.
  7. Allow Logic to create or populate the project.
  8. Save the result as a new Logic Pro project.

Do not begin mixing immediately. First check the complete imported timeline.

What Should Be Preserved?

A successful conversion should reproduce:

  • track organisation
  • clip order
  • timeline positions
  • source in and out points
  • embedded audio media
  • repeated uses of the same source
  • original project duration
  • gains and fades when Faithful mode is used and the information can be interpreted

The conversion should not be expected to reproduce every Final Cut-specific effect or processing decision.

Elements that may need to be recreated include audio plug-ins, track effects, complex automation, third-party processing, routing, some pan information and proprietary transition curves.

How to Check the Imported Logic Project

  • Compare the start time and first synchronization mark
  • Check the end of the timeline for truncation
  • Review every track for empty tracks, missing dialogue or shifted clips
  • Compare against the reference movie at several points
  • Check clip gain and fades (Clean vs Faithful if needed)
  • Save a consolidated Logic project so it no longer depends on temporary download paths

Common Problems and Fixes

AAF Cleaner Rejects the OMF

Check that the file is an OMF version 2 file, using embedded media, containing PCM audio, and not dependent on a separate media folder.

If the OMF uses external media, request a new embedded export.

The Converted AAF Opens but Contains No Audio

The original OMF may not contain embedded media, or some media objects may be incomplete. Confirm the source file size and ask the editor whether the OMF was exported as embedded or referenced.

Logic Reports Missing Media

When using an AAF with separate audio: extract the complete ZIP, keep the audio folder beside the AAF, do not rename the generated files, and do not open the AAF directly from inside the ZIP.

The Stereo Layout Is Different

Clean mode may deliberately separate stereo clips into left and right mono channels. Try Faithful mode when retaining stereo organisation is more important.

Fades Are Missing

Clean mode intentionally removes fades and crossfades. Use Faithful mode when they need to be retained.

The Timeline Is Shifted

Compare the Final Cut sequence start timecode, the reference movie timecode, the first imported clip position, the Logic project start and the frame rate of the reference video.

Some Clips Are Duplicated

Check whether the source OMF already contained duplicated clips or overlapping audio tracks. Compare with the original Final Cut timeline rather than assuming every duplicate was created during conversion.

The Original OMF Opens, but the Result Sounds Different

OMF does not reproduce an entire Final Cut mix environment. Differences may come from missing plug-ins, untransferred effects, different pan laws, automation, track processing or fade-curve interpretation.

Use the OMF primarily to recover the editable timeline and source audio.
